I also think this will encourage managers to bully and intimidate people by accusing them of alcohol/ drug abuse whether there is suspicion or not. What happens if its overheard you were at a family barbecue on a Sunday or you had a few drinks after work the day before. Does innocent small talk suddenly become grounds for suspicion, evidence to conduct you with.

Its hilarious how Royal Mail copies its competitors yet it is probably the first in the industry to roll this out nationwide to its workforce.
I may be wrong but due to most the industry being self employed drivers, Evri, Yodel, DPD etc I highly doubt they are tested
and wouldn't have thought it would be legal due to not being a direct employee.
Plus the low wage, immigrant, poverty type candidate that the industry is rife with probably have lots of alcohol and drug problems,
because unfortunately poverty breeds it.

What a waste of money! If you are driving under the influence, it is a police issue. There are random stops already by the police and they can
also pull you over if they think you are driving suspiciously, That is what they are there for, to enforce the law. A business shouldn't be steeping
into that territory, it is plain wrong.

A long time ago when I worked at Amazon (at, not for; as they did everything through agencies) they did random drug testing. Never quite understood how busting someone who likes a spliff at the weekend and isn't mugging a granny to pay for it is somehow a public good. Well, I was there so briefly the only time we were tested was at the induction - so for the 25% who chuck this job within 90 days they won't be here long enough to be hassled about it! Or will it be like the Changeover and they want you to come in on your day off to do it?

Nearly twenty years on, I've seen nearly all the positives about this job fall away for it to visibly approach the Amazon ideal - constant monitoring through an electronic device, (nearing) minimum wage, revolving door of employees between real jobs, and now sampling your urine. In the interests of equality, can we make this like the Apollo program? I want a livefeed of the Board's kidneys so we know they're not at risk of steering the company into a ravine.

Spot on. The lengths that some people go to on here, to defend their employer monitoring every aspect of their life, now outside of work as well is hilarious. Would you be under the influence of drink after say 3 pints at say 6 oclock in the evening followed by say 8 hours sleep.

This depends on many factors, but rough calculation is 1 pint = 2 units; so 3 pints = 6 units. It takes around 1 hour for the body to digest a unit of alcohol, and it doesn't start until 1 hour after you've stopped drinking. So after 3 pints it will take around 7 hours for that to be out your system.

Your body starts getting rid of alcohol very soon after you take the first sip.

So if you start at 6pm and have 3 pints (6 units) you'll be sober by about midnight.

Yes I’ll be sure to take that on board from someone who seems to have mastered the art of condescending snark yet offering jack in the way of actual content or contributions to the topics at hand. I could do a search to see if that is a common trait, but I don’t really care about you at all, which is why I’ve never noticed you on these forums before. I guess the vapid, pointless nature of your ‘critical appraising’ posts could be why.
