A 12-year-old boy has been left with serious injuries after he was hit by a Royal Mail van in Basildon.

On Monday (March 2), emergency services were called to Whitmore Way at around 4pm to reports of a crash.

When they arrived at the scene, they found that a young boy had been hit by the van.

Police officers immediately shut the road and paramedics attended to the injured boy.

He was taken to hospital where he has been treated for injuries to his face along with a serious injury to his leg.

One local resident, Carol Carey, phoned 999 after the incident happened nearby.

The 61-year-old previously said: "I didn't see the accident. A lady knocked and asked if I would phone 999.

"There are so many accidents on this road it's unbelievable.

"I have no idea what happened and how the boy was hit. There is so much traffic on this road and people weren't giving way so police had to come to close the road.

"As I was on the phone an ambulance pulled out of the garage and came here so they were here in a matter of minutes.

"People came out and put blankets on him. He had blood on his face and was moving his arms but not his legs."

Essex Police are now appealing for information and witnesses to come forward to help with their enquiries.
