Southend delivery office changes for the future

THE Southend delivery office is to change in readiness for the future according to a recent announcement by the Royal Mail.

SHANE O’Riordain, Managing Director of Regulation and Corporate Affairs, Royal Mail said: “Southend Delivery Office is to reduce the number of letter sorting machines at the site. This is because we need to focus on managing more parcels as volumes continue to grow.

“The initiative will have no impact on the high quality of service we offer to customers sending and receiving letters in the area.

“Letter sorting machines were designed to help Royal Mail sort letters in some delivery offices. They have done a great job. But, letter volumes have declined by 50 per cent since 2004 as people post fewer letters and receive more parcels. We expect letter volumes to fall by about 26% over the next five years or so.

“Royal Mail wants to invest £1.8 billion over five years to turnaround and grow its UK business. This is one of the biggest investment commitments made by any UK company. The Company wants to change from a UK letters company that delivers parcels, into a parcels-led company that also delivers letters.

“The investment programme will focus on customer service improvements, digital initiatives, network enhancements and new ways of working to deliver more productivity and efficiency.”
