A driver for postal firm DPD spent ten days in hospital after being attacked by a Staffie-Alsatian cross during her delivery rounds, but her boss showed little concern for her health and safety and instead asked: 'Who’ll deliver her parcels now?'

A DELIVERY driver left needing 70 stitches after a dog attack was stunned when her boss asked: “Who’ll deliver her parcels now?”

DPD worker Zahtoon Ali, 41, spent ten days in hospital after the mauling.

The mum of four was bitten on the hand, arm, leg and head by the Staffie-Alsatian cross on her 41st drop of the day.

As she lay bleeding, a brave passer-by called her depot boss after throwing cold water on the dog to get it to let go last month in Ockendon, Essex.

Zahtoon said: “I could hear him arguing with her. She told him, ‘So who’ll deliver her parcels now?’ I heard him say, ‘Where’s your humanity? She could have been killed’.

“When I was semi-conscious in the ambulance all I was thinking was, ‘I’ve missed my quota of parcels’. That’s how much pressure we’re all under.

“If I miss one they’ll call ten times. But they’ve only phoned once since I went to hospital.

“I thought I was going to die.

"It was like a monster attacked me and all they care about is Christmas targets.”

DPD said: “The depot have followed standard procedures, picked up the relevant costs and been in contact with the family throughout.”

It did not comment on claims about the depot manager.

Police said the dog was in kennels pending inquiries. No arrests were made.

I had a similar though not as serious experience not long after I first started, I was bitten by a dog on the back of my leg, struggled to a phone box ( no mobiles or PDAs in those days ), phoned the office and the first question was not how are you or have you called an ambulance but can you finish your delivery? I looked down at the pool of blood around my foot and just said f**k off then put the phone down and called an ambulance. I had to have 27 stitches in my leg and while I was in A&E the same manager turned up. He asked for the keys to the boxes and disappeared.

That was 20-odd years ago, no matter the firm managers are managers. The role seems to attract a certain type of.....
