Jersey Post is being closely monitored by the competition watchdog after missing three of its nine quality of service targets.
These related to mail that was due to be delivered the next day:
From the UK to a Jersey address
From Guernsey to a Jersey address
From Jersey to a Guernsey address.
That meant the island's mail service only met its target on on-island deliveries, with successful UK-to-Jersey next day delivery reached only 43.5% of the time.
As a result, the competition watchdog CICRA has stepped in to monitor the company with three-monthly updates, as they say they want to make sure customers have the best service possible. That monitoring will stop when there is a sustained improvement.
Jersey Post says that they accept that last year's performance was 'disappointing' but put it down to problems from the Royal Mail on their delivery of post to the island.
They say that last year there were Royal Mail network issues getting items to Jersey ontime on more than 50% of delivery days
In comparision, they say, that local-to-local delivery, where Jersey Post has total control, 96.4% of items were delivered ontime.
Jersey Post says they are still trying to make changes to make the service better though.
One of the key changes for 2017 has been the introduction of a larger mail aircraft to ensure more mail can reach Jersey Post early in the morning for processing and delivery that day. Indeed, Jersey Pos thas confirmed that since the introduction of the larger plane, quality of service of inbound next day items has improved by 50%.
In addition, Jersey Post has also pushed back start and release times for delivery officers to ensure all first class and priority mail can be sorted and out for delivery the same day. Whilst this does have an impact on delivery time for customers, Jersey Post believes that fulfilling first class and priority mail contract obligations for next-day delivery is a key priority.
There have already been improvements since the start of the year, and Jersey Post is confident targets can be met during the year.
