3 years after each allocation https://www.myroyalmail.com/sites/defau ... ochure.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
So with a new tranche coming soon there are 4 different 3 years and 5 years anniversaries. But the biggest and first tranche is 16 Oct 2016 and 16 Oct 2018.After three years, you can sell your Free Shares or transfer them out of the SIP but you
may have to pay income tax and National Insurance on the shares. Please see ‘Taking
shares out of the SIP’ on page 22 for details.
After five years, you will not have to pay income tax or National Insurance on the
Free Shares.
You will not have to pay capital gains tax when the Free Shares leave the SIP

The earliest you can sell your first batch of 613(full time) shares is 15th October 2016, the 2nd batch of 116 on 9th April 2017 and the 3rd lot of 103 is on 5th October 2018. Add another two years onto each date if you don’t want to pay tax and NI.bluealbert wrote:Can we sell our shares ? What has previously owning bank shares got to do with your free RM shares?

Does it matter? They didn't cost us anything directly and you don't get the same amount of interest from a bank account if you had an equal sum in there as we have in dividends. Unless you are desperate for the money keep them for at least the 5 years so you don't give 32% to George at number 11.

If you are a basic rate taxpayer it is 20% Tax and unless it has increased 12% NI. A big hit unless you really need the cash.bluealbert wrote:Didn't realise it was 32%Surreypostie wrote:Does it matter? bluealbert, you'd be crazy to sell them before 2018.
If you pay 32% tax on a share price of 489p, you are in effect going to receive about 332/p share for them, only 2p more than the government flogged them for
If you hang on for two years, you'll receive about 43p/share in dividend payments over the intervening time, too.
So, even if the share price were to monumentally collapse, down to as low as say, 300p (highly unlikely, in my humble opinion), you would still have received more money (disposal proceeds+dividends) by waiting until 2018 than you would by selling and paying tax/NI
