I have sent a letter to my friend who lives in Brazil (via the Royal Mail's "international signed for" option) and I was just wondering, what will happen if my friend happens not to be at home when the letter is delivered? Will the postal person give him a chance to go to collect the letter from a postal depot or something? Or does he get no chances, and is the letter returned to me if he is not in at the first chance?

I'm not familiar with Brazil's post but I would imagine that if your friend isn't at home when the post person arrives that they would leave a card saying the letter could be picked it up from an office or redelivered etc.
