sick whilst on strike

Post by WARDY »

just got notification about proposed strike day on Friday, If someone is on holiday or on sick leave, do they lose whatever hours or days that the strike involves as those affected did not go out their way to save themselves from losing some of their normal pay by jumping in for holidays or joining the sick brigade, It could be that if you are on holiday then your pay will not be deducted, but maybe if you are on sick leave then you will be docked whatever hours the strike involves. Anyone got some information on this thanks.

Nope they don't lose anything. It allows POL to claim more people are working than actually are.

In strikes I donate any pay I get from pre-arranged leave either in the form of providing sustenance for the picket line, or by donating a days pay to a strike fund.

Its also a common occurrence for a very small minority in RM that they will go sick on strike days to avoid losing pay, however they do run the risk of falling foul of the attendance procedure should they genuinely become sick at a later date. There is nothing that can be done about it so, as long as your conscience is clear let them rot in their pit and hope they don't ask for the Unions help at some point.

Thanks aiden and true blue, my conscience is clear, as I am currently on sick leave, and have worked with guys in supply chain that have scabbed, I know that some people will have the frame of mind that they dont want to go against the unions decision but will do anything to protect their take home pay, people in cases like that are in my mind gutless and want their cake and eat it [use the union when needed - but go missing when the shoe is on the other foot]. If there are picket lines set in motion on Friday, then my thoughts are with my colleagues but it would look bad regarding myself not being fit for work but being able to travel and go on a picket line.
