Dog expert offers help to terrified Arbroath posties

An Angus dog psychologist has offered a helping hand to terrified posties after Royal Mail bosses halted services on an Angus street.

Deliveries to homes in Arbroath were suspended for 10 days after a postman was chased down the street by a rottweiler.

The postie had to jump a fence to escape the dog on Howard Street, leading Royal Mail bosses to stop deliveries to 25 homes there and in adjacent Cairnie Street.

But trainer and dog psychologist Lesley Connelly, who offers professional volunteer support to Angus Dog Rescue, said perceived problems with dog breeds can be solved with simple training.

She has offered help to prevent further blanket bans being put in place to protect posties.

She said: “I want to offer them any help I can. If that dog would have wanted to do harm to the postman, it would have got him.

“He said he jumped over a fence to get away but it would have jumped that fence too, if it wanted to.

“As they are mastiffs, they are not very territorial animals.”

Residents were told of the mail suspension in a letter from the local delivery manager revealing details of the August 8 incident.

Despite acknowledging that it is easy to be afraid of breeds such as Staffordshire bull terriers, Lesley said they are “playful, a bit cheeky, but not innately dangerous”.

“I have done some work with the local council whose housing officers go into a lot of places where there are dogs they previously would have been unsure of,” she added.

Her time would be better spent talking to he moronic owners who are at fault,rather than the postie's who are only trying to do their job,I dislike the way she implies the postie's are in need of help.
