ROSS, Skye and Lochaber MP Charles Kennedy has signed a motion in parliament raising “concern” about the sustainability of Royal Mail’s universal postal service, as TNT Post UK expands its end to end delivery operations.
Under the universal service, Royal Mail relies on revenues from areas where postal services are easier to deliver to in order to cover the costs of the nationwide network. It ensures homes and businesses in all corners of the country are served at the same price.
The early day motion tabled by Aberdeenshire MP Sir Robert Smith has received cross-party support from MPs across the UK.
It calls on the postal service regulator Ofcom to undertake a review of end-to-end postal competition “as a matter of urgency”.
Mr Kennedy said: “It is vital we ensure communities and businesses across Ross, Skye and Lochaber have access to deliveries six days a week through the universal postal service.
“It is crucially important that competition is fair so that people in rural areas across the UK, such as our communities in the Highlands, do not lose access to Royal Mail services because of other companies prioritising profit driven business in urban areas.
“The regulator has a legal obligation to protect the universal service and by bringing forward their planned investigation Ofcom will find it easier to ensure that this vital service remains sustainable.
“There needs to be a level playing field and fair competition to prevent local businesses and communities being forced to pay extra for postal services.”

whether we are a private company or not the unfair competition is still an issue . We are a private company now so best to accept that instead of moaning about it.hans solo wrote:he wasnt to upset when he voted to privatise us though
