Team in Hereford and Worcester invited a dog warden to mail processing unit
Dogs on the loose are a regular problem on many delivery rounds.
Safety audits completed through the World Class Mail Safety step 4 process in Hereford and Worcester showed that loose dogs were a high risk.
Also, 49% of all accidents in the area were caused by dog bites.
Working together
Working with WCM champion David Harwood, CWU area safety rep Tony Waterhouse organised a session with the local dog warden to advise staff on how to deal with loose dogs.
Tony says: ‘It was a very professional talk.
‘It was excellent for advice on dog behaviour and what action to take in different circumstances.’
Postwoman Clare Lessemun was bitten by a dog. She says: ‘The dog warden gave an excellent explanation of how to interpret dog body language and superb advice on how to react when around dogs.’
Posting peg
Shortly after the talk, a posting peg saved postwoman Candice Astley-Morton’s fingers.
Candice (pictured) says: ‘I was sceptical about posting pegs to begin with because I’ve never had my fingers bitten before, but I’m so glad I had it with me on this occasion.
‘The posting peg I used was ripped from my hands by the dog and chewed up.
‘I used it because I only had one small letter for the address and I couldn’t put it through the letterbox without pushing my fingers through.’

Dog warden issues warning
I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Question....
If the posting peg is pulled through the letter box by dog, chewed up, dogs chokes on plastic, dies...who's liable then? I'm not prepared to use a posting peg. If a dog is behind the door, the mail gets killed off as inaccessible, simples...

If you carry out a dynamic risk assessment and decide that even an attempt to deliver with a Posting peg is dangerous then no-one can overrule you, not even Moya Greene.
However as far as I know you cannot kill off as inaccessible, you can only endorse as Dog Loose and date it, then reattempt delivery when it returns to your frame.
