My office.Diverting second class machineable letters/flats.
My office seems to be diverting second class machineable letters and flats to Leeds and Manchester, is anyone other office suffering like we are, could be the start of the end for us. Sorry forgot to mention I'm from Darlington.

I've split this and made it your own thread.
Where bouts are you?maybe some of the others on here will have some info.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

re: Don't quite follow
If there is too much (don't know the answer) and there is spare capacity elsewhere, then it surely makes sense to utilise that capacity without having to use docket/overtime. This is assuming that quality of service does not suffer etc...
RM has a pipeline that it pays for (similar to telecoms and gas sector) and you want to have that pipeline as full & and has flexible as possible?
Am I missing something here?

DIVERSIONS
Like I said in my previous post " theres a union meeting to discuss the removal of work and jobs from my mail centre" now if they were discussing one or the other you could be right but both together sounds like a winding down operation too me how about you. First we lost our First class despatch to Newcastle as it would save money, I believe all work in Newcastle on a Saturday is S/A over time rates, then the Sundays went, it appears that they are now trying to get rid of the second class work which will afftect quite a few on earlies, watch out this could happen to you!

Overall approach
There have been closures going on for years. More will come, whether they are doing it by cloak & dagger I honestly don't know.
RM has a legacy network from when mail was used as a social form of communication. It made sense to have a network of collections and processing in every area. This is just not the case anymore. Most mail is B2C via direct mailing produced at v.large print factories. RM will be best able to compete by having processing at key transportation links around the country.
There is no surprise in my mind that Rugby/Daventry have become the centre of distribution in this country as it's the junction between the M1/M6.
RM are losing huge swathes of outbound mech mail to TNT/UK Mail and DHL (with others gaining licences and further pushing the prices down). This must mean that RM will have spare capacity at numerous mail centres, which either means they are not commercially viable.
Your best bet is to become an expert processing person with the new machinery TNT/UK Mail & DHL are using. That is the safest way of securing your long term future in processing. RM's machinery is out-dated at best.

Bob,read about FOzzie here The FOzzmeister
But what i don't understand then Fozz,if all these MLO's close, then how are they going to get the work down to us.
For instance,i presume you know Nine Elms, they do SE my patch and SW,i would again presume they are safe,or are they?
Nearest one to me down my way is Dartford, but that's a bit of a slog.
How many are there in London?and what with traffic and the like,The Old Kent Road at rush hour in the morn, that starts at 5-30ish.
I would of thought in the major cities they would be pretty safe.

re: Not sure I understand everything you mention
London:
Lonodn used to have about 10 mail centres. It will have only 4 soon (once West London Mail Centre finally closes) You Have Mount Pleasant, ELMC, Nine Elms, and Greenford.
Meeting quality of service requirements is based on having processing and distribution centred around the main road transportation hubs. The original set-up was based around railway stations, which most don't use anymore.
Mount Pleasant will be replaced with a one-level mail centre built on the current car-park (to the best of my knowledge).
I'm away for the next couple of weeks so will entertain you all with my musing on my return

Bit of a rumour that ELMC could close as their lease runs out just before the Olympics.

Diverting mail
I hear the reason that mail is being diverted is since foreign mail was taken out of Manchester they have machines doing very little, flat sorting machines can also handle mech mail. A source who has seen one of these machines else where says once its full and ready to go you need another 500 trays of mail or its not worth running, anybody else heard this.
