Australia Post and its chief executive, Ahmed Fahour, face Federal Court action over a move to cut union membership payment options for postal staff.

The Communications Workers Union has made the unusual move of suing both Australia Post and Mr Fahour in the Federal Court.

Lawyers for the union, Maurice Blackburn, filed a court application this week, alleging Victorian members were unfairly targeted by Australian Post, by not allowing payroll deductions for union membership fees.

Enrico Burgio from the law firm said the deduction change was ''retribution'' against the Victorian union for opposing a new enterprise agreement signed by Australia Post staff in July.

Union assistant national secretary Martin O'Nea said Mr Fahour had made a side deal with interstate branches of the union in order to freeze out Victorian members.

The union is suing Australia Post for up to $255,000 and Mr Fahour personally for up to $51,000.
