City Link staff gain public support for possible strike

Staff of City Link in Hailsham continued their protests against the company’s new owners by handing out propaganda leaflets in Eastbourne town centre on Saturday.

The group of six, including some members of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers, parked themselves outside Marks and Spencer in the Arndale Centre and talked to the shop’s customers about the treatment City Link staff are receiving.

City Link was recently taken over by another organisation, which is now demanding the staff alter their contracts and sign new terms and conditions by October, 10.

In a fight over the pay and provisions they are now being forced to accept, the City Link staff were due to strike for seven days but the High Court granted an injunction to stop this happening due to an administration error.

The problem has now been resolved and the staff are planning another strike during the company’s busiest period in the lead up to Christmas - a proposal they plan to re-ballot soon.

The handing out of leaflets took place up and down the country outside shops that City Link serve, including Marks and Spencer, John Lewis and Mothercare.

Neil Plummer, East Sussex Branch Secretary of the RMT, insists the action was well-received and gained much support from members of the public.
