JOHANNESBURG – The Communication Workers Union (CWU) is gearing up for a national strike at the South African Post Office after talks collapsed at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).
The CWU represents 60 percent of staff at the parastatal.
Last week, it declared a dispute with the Post Office and rejected a wage hike offer of five percent.
That offer was raised to six percent during the talks, but the union is standing firm on its demand of a 10 percent hike.
CWU spokesperson Matakana Mothapo says they’re waiting for the CCMA to issue a certificate of non-resolution.
“We’re waiting for the CCMA to give us the certificate and then we’ll go to the streets.”
Meanwhile, the Post Office has described the CWU’s strike threat as premature.
It said talks at the CCMA have not yet begun.
