Since the start of the year 800 postmen are tagged with GPS systems so their movements can be tracked.

These GPS systems allow it to be checked exactly how long it takes to do a specific route. The postmen have to be made aware that these checks are being carried out.

Postmen who the management think need too long for their routes can be electronically tagged and on the other hand postmen who think their route is too long can also have it checked.

In Carinthia this has been implemented only a few times to date and the employees were informed beforehand. The results of these checks have not yet been released.

Ewald Kollnitz, from the Post Union, said: "The union has still not got the results. But we have arranged that we will get to analyse them. I think they will however show that some of the routes are too long.

Stephan Fuchs Press Spokesperson for the Austrian Post said: "Throughout the whole of Austria there is slightly less post staff over the past few years and likely to be less in the future.

"There has been a reduction in the number of items being sent of four to five per cent due to internet and email. This is the reason for the reduction in personnel.
