Royal Mail sell-off plan 'stupid'

The Government's controversial plan to privatise the Royal Mail was branded "stupid" by the head of the TUC today as the threat of strikes moved closer.

General secretary Frances O'Grady made clear the union movement's opposition to the sell-off.

In her keynote speech to the TUC Congress in Bournemouth, she said: "Let's send a strong message from this Congress - we will fight this senseless, stupid sell-off of the family silver - hands off our Royal Mail."

The Communication Workers Union is preparing to ballot its members for strikes over issues linked to privatisation, with official notice of the move set to be given this week.

Voting will start later this month, with the result due in early October. CWU members, and Royal Mail managers in the Unite union have already shown their opposition to privatisation in previous consultative ballots.
