On Friday the 30th of August, the Communication Workers Union, Nottingham & District Amalgamated Branch (which represents over 2,700 postal workers across the NG postcode area), will be holding a ‘East Midlands press event’ in line with the national ‘Save Our Royal Mail’ campaign. The event is aimed to further highlight real concerns on the coalition government’s plans to privatise the Royal Mail later in the year.

The event will be held at the Forest Recreation Ground, Gregory Boulevard, Nottingham, NG7 6ND, between 10:00 to 11:00am.

At the event 350 red balloons with the ‘Save Our Royal Mail’ logo will be released to highlight the 350 years of a public postal service. (These balloons will be released at 10:30am.)

The event will be attended by local postal workers, Labour Councillors and Nottingham’s Labour MPs Chris Leslie (Nottingham East MP) and Vernon Coaker (Gedling MP); with interview opportunities available.

The press event is also being held three days in advance of a ‘Special Parliamentary Debate’ planned for the 2ndof September on Royal Mail privatisation.

Darren Glebocki, for the Communication Workers Union (CWU) Nottingham & District Branch said: “The Universal Service Obligation (USO) which requires Royal Mail to collect, process and deliver mail to every address across the UK at the same price six-days-a-week and which has been the cornerstone of our postal service for the last 350 years is under direct threat by these sell off plans. Assurances given by the government that the same price six-days-a-week nation’s collection and delivery service will not change under a sell off is nonsense, as the privatisation legislation itself will allow a private owner to drop the USO in less than two years time.”

Lee Barron, CWU Midlands Regional Secretary said: “The British public are being mislead by government on these sell off plans which are a best confused and outmoded. Royal Mail has modernised and has returned to a health profit, showing that we already have a successful public owned and publicly accountable postal service. This government is presenting a false case for the sell off of our Royal Mail in order to justify a deeply unpopular policy which is only driven by dogma.”
