Last Friday postal workers were protesting for their rights on the bank of the Mapocho river.

SANTIAGO – Last Friday, fifty Chilean postal workers began a protest strike on the bridge Pio Nono in Santa Maria, next to the Faculty of Law of the University of Chile. The action was part of ongoing strikes by Chilean postal workers.

In a first instance the strikers set up barricades, but then decided to continue the mobilization on the bank of the Mapocho river, where they kept protesting with flags and picket signs, asking for a solution to their demands.

The protest was maintained peacefully, without diverting traffic. It has been one of many instances throughout Chile where the postal workers have taken to the streets.

Since midnight last Wednesday, the postal workers around Chile are striking for a salary increase. To date the monthly salary of a workers reaches the current minimum wage of 193,000 pesos, to change this situation, the postal workers are demanding a boost of 45,000 pesos. As long as the negotiations do not reach an agreement, the employees have assured the continuance of the demonstrations.

According to Rafael Aravena, spokesman for the Chilean Postal officials in San Antonio, talks are still standing: ”We are still waiting to see if the company responds and what they are ready to offer is accommodating with the demands we have, we are expecting that soon we will know if there is a solution or at least an improvement in that aspect . If there is no advancement, the strike will continue until there is something close to what we asked for.”
