Postal workers campaign against Royal Mail privatisation in Hereford

CAMPAIGNERS against the privatisation of Royal Mail staged a demonstration in Hereford last weekend.

More than 1,000 people visited their stand in High Town last Saturday and members of the public signed a postcard which was to be sent to the county’s MPs, outlining the concerns.

Brendon Allen, secretary of the Worcester and Hereford branch, described the reaction from the public as supportive and “tremendously encouraging”.

He said: “We were told on more than one occasion that this is one privatisation to many.

“There was tremendous concern among the public about the future of the six-day service for counties like Hereford.

"The public recognise that the profiteers will not be interested in providing good public services for people that live in rural and non-profitable areas."

He urged people to sign up to the campaign and to let their MP know that they do not want to lose this “valued public service”.

Billy Hayes, Communication Workers Union general secretary, added that the privatisation is “illogical” and “unbelievable”.

He said that Royal Mail is profitable, has modernised and can be successful in public ownership.
