The volume of hand-sorted mail at TNT Post UK has fallen following the use of offshore video coding, saving costs and time for the company. Prime Vision who delivered the system alongside PostNL Shore now aims to reduce volumes further through new coding tasks.
A key element of the system upgrade has been sorting to letterbox level, a critical element in TNT Post’s burgeoning end-to-end delivery service. Deeper sorting also meets the requirements of TNT Post’s customer, Royal Mail, for the addition of an accurate delivery point suffix.
Head of Sortation and Network Development at TNT Post UK, Chris O’Malley, said, “The more information that needs to be keyed-in, the greater the cost of operation. By rationalising the whole verification process, Prime Vision minimised the number of key strokes needed saving us time and money.”
As well as an address research mode to reduce hand sorting, the latest release of Prime Vision’s microsite MailMatch for TNT Post also includes an international mode. This will improve the efficiency of sorting international mail and ultimately enable this to be undertaken on a country level.
Statistical analysis of performance gains is ongoing but TNT Post has confirmed that in addition to meeting the specific needs of its strategic developments, hand sorting has benefited from a further significant reduction.
Offshore video coding uses image-capture technology. Its features include letter video coding to six-sided parcel recognition. Sorting machines are connected to a web-coding platform, where the data entry of postal codes, street names or any other information from the lifted images, take place on an offshore location.
