THE traditional role of the postman is to be transformed under plans to provide greater support to some of Jersey’s most vulnerable residents.
In the coming weeks, postal workers will be delivering support as well as parcels to elderly or needy Islanders as part of the new Jersey Post Community Care Service – believed to be one of the first of its kind in Britain.
Under the scheme, postmen and women will call on residents signed up to the service while delivering their post and report any concerns to the Health department or community care charities.
Full report in Wednesday’s JEP, out at noon.

Concerns about new ‘caring postman’ role

PLANS for postmen to provide basic support to elderly or vulnerable Islanders are ‘fraught with danger’, the chairman of Age Concern has warned.
Jersey Post is to launch a new trial scheme during which postal workers will check on residents in St Brelade while delivering their post and report any concerns back to the Health department or care charities.
If the service is successful it is likely to be expanded across other areas of the Island.
But Daphne Minihane, chairman of Age Concern in Jersey, has warned that many postal workers will simply not have the time to carry out proper checks – and that health problems could be missed.
