THE Royal Mail is a service. In many rural communities it is also a lifeline, particularly with the banks also closing branches.

Unlike banks, post offices should not have to be profitable.

All too often, we have seen what happens when services such as prisons and railways get the private sector treatment.

There is much that could be done to expand the Royal Mail and improve its efficiency but we, the public, do not require it to make a profit – simply to provide a service.

Post offices have traditionally been an integral part of communities.

If more post offices are closed once the Royal Mail passes into the hands of private enterprise, it will spell the death knell for many communities and another nail will have been driven into the lid of the coffin marked UK by the EU.

The UK has already surrendered control of much of its legislation to Brussels and our politicians have a responsibility to retain control of those few elements over which they still do have control.

I would encourage people to contact their MPs if they wish to prevent the loss of the Royal Mail.
