Alan Johnson claimed to be a 'Thatcherite on Royal Mail privatisation" as the former postman looked at the future of the service, which the Tory prime minister declined to sell-off.
Business Secretary Vince Cable said Labour acknowledged the service needed a lot of investment and the current government plans had "nothing new or surprising".
He was behind selling off more than half of the postal service, with some shares going to the staff, although details were still be be worked out.

There was a phone in on the Nicky Campbell show this morning, still available on the i-player (Your Call 9- 10). Did not hear all of the show but there was an emphasis placed on the fact RM do not deliver as many hand written letters or birthday cards anymore. I did not hear any mention of the diversification of revenue streams RM has adopted such as D2Ds or the increase in parcels/ packets (may have missed it if it was mentioned). It seems RM is being protrayed as an organisation that is dying on its ar4e, rather than one that is profitable......

yeah I listened to it as well. Dinosaur was used by one caller and I felt it was quite disheartening really . the usual mob making RM out to be a basket case with the odd old lady ringing in to say she will really miss her postman, what a nice man he is, really looks out for us in our village......
most people just don't have a clue about what the whole job and industry entails but feel they can still express an opinion on the phone. when I joined after spending 9 years in the army I thought it would be a doddle. wandering around the streets with half a bag OF mail to deliver !! WRONG it was flaming hard work, getting up @ 5am is no joke to start off with , the pressure to knock the round in before your driver cleared off with the bags and then delivering the bloody stuff in all kinds of weather frost, rain, snow or heat take your pick which do you prefer Mr Telephone man ??? of course as you get more senior you may be lucky to pick up an easier delivery , nice and flat with no long drives and gates and pissy arsed dogs. I thought that's what seniority was all about easing yourself into a nice job as you got older and slower
then onto the mail centre relentless sorting , arduous tipping and numerous other tasks to numb the brain ..... sleeved Yorks with thousands of Amazon packets inside .....who is going to sort this stuff so Mr Telephone can get his nice little gift the next day

Alan Johnston is worse than a man short.Clearly more interested in promoting his book than saving Royal mail. When Cable says 'you know and the unions know that we are at the end of the story-and you wont be renationalising'..not a peep from Johnson.What happened to people getting angry in this country.
