There was a calling card in the post the other day. Someone had tried to deliver a parcel when we were out. Usually when this happens, you wait a day, take the card to the Royal Mail depot a five-minute walk away and retrieve it. Once, when my wife missed an urgent delivery, she phoned the depot and the manager drove it round himself.
This time, the card was from a new company called iPostParcels.com. We had options. Specify another day for delivery (sorry, I’ll still be at work). Print off a label telling the postman where to leave the parcel (I don’t have a printer). Visit its depot near Star Lane, which I thought was a level on Mario Kart but is actually a Docklands Light Rail station about an hour away. I stayed on hold to its 0845 number for 10 minutes before I gave up.
Privatisation, eh? Choice, efficiency, convenience … but no parcels.

Saw one of their vans about in my locality the other day, did a double-take as I had never heard of them before
