Reassurances from the Business Department and Ofcom about the future of postal services are denounced as “hollow” by campaign

Save Our Royal Mail, the campaign to protect postal services, has today released a dossier disproving the main claims being made by the government that the postal service will be protected if it is privatised.

Campaign Director Mario Dunn said:

“The government is trying to stifle debate about Royal Mail services ahead of a sell off. It sent a warning letter to Members of Parliament not to accept arguments about services being cut and prices rising.

“Yet the government’s so called guarantees ring hollow – its “myth busters” document contains more holes than a golf course”

In response Save Our Royal Mail is today releasing a dossier setting out exactly how a privatised Royal Mail can reduce services, particularly in rural areas and send prices skyrocketing.

Dunn said:

“Despite claims to the contrary, there are simply not enough protections in place to ensure affordable postal services, particularly in rural areas, are maintained at their current level.

“Behind the scenes the government and regulator are trying to stop all debate about postal services ahead of impending privatisation. They refuse to explain exactly how, for example, prices will not shoot up if they are unregulated.

“They might also explain how, without any Ministerial oversight or contractual obligations in place, special services such as freepost for HM Forces overseas can be maintained or Royal Mail’s proud heritage will survive.

“We are setting out clearly today the threats ahead for our postal service. The only “myth” out there is that the government has put in place adequate protections should Royal Mail be sold off.”
