Hi again
I am confused whether the older Alphanumeric freepost licence numbered letters also require a 1st or 2nd class postmark or not
For example Freepost WV1904
would this have a 1st or 2nd with bars
It again seems that Royal Mail are contradicting themselves when I enquire
I am aware the newer Response Services freepost has a 1st or 2nd class denotion
For example AAAA-BBBB-CCCC
This has a 1st or 2nd with bars and a bar code below the denotion

Your best bet may be to contact the Response Services team in Glasgow via the email address response.services.admin@royalmail.com (as listed at http://www.royalmail.com/general-corres ... 7-19350704).
From memory, you should not use the current design of indicia because the small barcode below the 1st or 2nd directs our sorting machines to look in specific places on the envelope for a 12 character licence number so that the items can be automatically billed. Your items won't have that 12 character licence so the machines will just reject the item to a different box so that it can be manually billed.
There was an older design of indicia which had the 1st or 2nd and the two bars but did not have the small barcode beneath the 1st or 2nd. This was from before auto-billing and the 12 character licences came in. I think that this is the design you will need but the Response Services team can give you definitive advice on that.
It may work out cheaper in the long run to switch to a new 12 character licence as you might be able to access cheaper prices if you can design your item to meet the Response Services Plus criteria
