Union demanding 6% pay rise from Deutsche Post

Germany’s united services union Ver.di has said the first round of negotiations with Deutsche Post over a new collective bargaining agreement came to nothing.

The union had talks with the German postal service on Friday, but said the company was not offering enough of a pay rise.

Ver.di said it wanted a 6% linear increase in wages for the 132,000 public employees – at least EUR 140m a month extra.

The union wants a EUR 65 monthly increase in the allowance for apprentices and students.

The next round of negotiation is scheduled to take place on 15th April.

Andrew Kocsis, the union’s vice-chairman and chief negotiator, said: “In the second round the employer must create a competitive offer no the negotiating table.

“Employees expected a lot more money.”

Deutsche Post is contending with ongoing declines in mail volumes, which have been pressuring the bottom line in the Mail division. A spokesman called the union’s demands “very ambitious”.

Last year’s labour deal was based on a 4% pay rise, in a contract due to run out at the end of this month.
