Royal Mail boycotts 30 Shrewsbury homes after dog attacks

Bosses at Royal Mail are refusing to deliver post to around 30 homes in Shropshire after one of its workers was allegedly attacked by a dog.


The incident is said to have happened on the green in Pulrose Walk, Reabrook, Shrewsbury on Monday.

According to Royal Mail bosses the same dog attacked and bit a postman a year ago. As a result postal deliveries to 30 homes in the area have been suspended until the dog is brought under control by its owners.

Residents are now being forced to collect their mail from the Royal Mail inquiry office in Castlefields.

Royal Mail spokeswoman Val Bodden, said: “Royal Mail takes very seriously the safety of its employees, particularly our front-line staff who deliver the mail.

“Unfortunately, dog attacks are a hazard faced by our postmen and women every working day and our first priority as an employer is to ensure the welfare and safety of our people, who provide a valuable service to our customers.”

She said deliveries would resume when staff could be sure the dog would be kept indoors by its owners.

Police today said they had not received any reports of a dog attack in the area.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “I got a letter saying the Royal Mail were working with the dog owner and the local authority to make sure doesn’t happen again but until that time they would not be delivering post.

“It is just inconvenient; I have now got to go down to the sorting office.”

A man responsible for a dog accused of attacking a postman in Shrewsbury today claimed the Royal Mail was ‘overreacting’ after it cancelled deliveries to about 30 nearby homes.


Daniel Roster, 21, of Pulrose Walk in Reabrook, claimed his father’s eight-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier Tyson was ‘as soft as anything’.

Royal Mail bosses are refusing to deliver post to about 30 homes in the Pulrose Walk area until the dog is brought under control. They allege that the dog attacked and bit a postman 12 months ago.

Mr Roster, a father-of-two, said Tyson had previously attacked a postman but said the dog had been victimised because of its breed. He said: “I was in the shower when it happened and my girlfriend came out and told me the dog was barking.

“I came down and saw the postman threatening Tyson with a broom. I think it was the postman’s fluorescent clothing that he wasn’t keen on. It’s definitely an overreaction and I think it’s because he is a Staffie,

“He’s as soft as anything; he gets on with all the other dogs on the street. I’ve got two kids in the house, I wouldn’t keep him if he wasn’t safe.”

Mr Roster said he had been looking after Tyson for his father and said the dog was no longer living at his address and he had written to Royal Mail to inform them of this.

F**king numpty, it's not the dogs fault, I'll agree with that, it's his for not being able to train or secure the dog.

I have dogs that I don't let out anywhere near people unless they're with me and the people are ok with them, I've trained them but even I know that they can still attack.
