To the postal workers and their Trade Unions in Greece, Italy, Ireland, Portugal and Spain:

The UNI Europa Post & Logistics Committee met on Friday, the 11th of May 2011 in Luxembourg and discussed the consequences and problems of the crisis in Greece, Italy, Ireland, Portugal and Spain.

The members of the UNI Europa Post & Logistics Committee express their concern regarding the further austerity policy by the European Union and national governments. The committee is particularly troubled by cost cutting in public services like postal services. Cuts in public services deteriorate the strength of our societies and the social costs are largely borne by workers which are not responsible for the current situation. Public services in general and postal services in particular are crucial elements of a good working society. Postal services mean communication and a prosperous economy especially for small and medium sized enterprises and for patrons in rural areas. UNI Europa Post & Logistics Committee expresses its opposition to these austerity measures, particularly in postal services.

Especially in times of crisis it is wantonly negligent to cut public services, they guarantee jobs and they make sure a country can recover fast with economic growth and security for workers. We say no to austerity measures, and no to cuts in public services, social security and pension systems!

The UNI Europa Post & Logistics Committee:

believes that only together with the workers and their Trade Unions, this crisis can be overcome.
calls workers to join their Trade Unions as the only organisations which fight for their rights in these times.
demands a stop to austerity measures and cost savings in public services and social security like cuts in salaries or pensions and increases in working time.
shows solidarity with postal workers and will support them in their fights against wrong cost cuttings and reducing of salaries in times of crisis.
supports the postal Trade Unions in Greece, Italy, Ireland, Portugal and Spain with all our energy and competences.
We are confident our affiliated postal Trade Unions present the fairest solutions out of the crisis and are the only force defending postal workers in these hard times. UNI Europa Post & Logistics fully supports the postal Trade Unions in all affected countries with all our energy and stands in full solidarity behind the postal workers. Only with strong Trade Unions can we find a way out of this crisis. The victims of the crisis can’t be the workers. We demand that those who produced this crisis - the banks and financial institutions and the regulators who let them run wild – take full responsibility. We won’t pay for your crisis.
