Postal workers staged a one-day walkout at 2pm on Thursday, shutting most Finnish post offices. The action will not affect post points that operate in conjunction with other businesses.
Post service provider Itella says that the walkout runs counter to the industry agreement between the employer and the employees.
The head of the Finnish Post and Logistics Union PAU, Esa Vilkuna, admits that the action is unlawful but calls it “understandable.”
Itella began consultative negotiations on staff reductions on Wednesday, aiming to cut up to 430 jobs or a whopping one third of jobs in post offices.
“The employees have had to weather many consultative negotiations by this point,” Vilkuna points out.
