Worker and his mother decontaminated by 999 crew after chemical spill at DHL in Warrington

A man had to be decontaminated by 999 crews at his home after falling ill following a chemical spillage at his works.

The man's mother also had to be decontaminated as a precaution.

Firefighters and ambulance crews went to their home in Fernclough Road, Harpurhey, to treat them.

The man was later taken to North Manchester General Hospital for further treatment.

He had been working at DHL Freight in Kingsland Grange, Woolston, Warrington, two hours earlier when there was an accidental spillage of 200 litres of Topanol, a chemical liquid which is a heating oil additive.

The man and seven other staff helped to contain the spillage before Cheshire fire crews arrived.

When the crews arrived the eight workers had already gone home after finishing their shift.

They were each contacted as vapours from the chemical can be harmful and cause skin irritation.

It is believed traces of the chemical may have been on his boots as he drove home and vapours from it affected him as he was in a confined space in his car.

The worker from Harpurhey reported that he had felt unwell and emergency crews decontaminated at his home before he was taken to hospital. No other workers were taken ill.

The alarm was raised at the freight depot at 6.20am today. Workers were evacuated from the site and fire crews used absorbent granules to contain the chemical and make the area safe.
