OFFICERS of the Port of Spain CID are probing an incident in which three armed bandits staged a daylight robbery at the Communications Workers' Union (CWU), along upper Henry Street, Port of Spain, yesterday.
Secretary general of the CWU John Julien, in a brief telephone interview, confirmed the incident, saying he and his president, Joseph Remy, were out of office when the bandits struck.
The incident occurred shortly around noon when three men entered the office requesting to speak with Remy, indicating they had a matter they wanted the union pick up on their behalf.
Julien said when the men were told Remy was not in office, they asked to speak with the personnel in accounts.
He said, "They basically, at that time, just held hostage, for less than five minutes, the two Accounts persons, and they were relieved of an undisclosed sum of cash and then they left.
"It's an unfortunate situation, especially in light of the fact that we deal with a number of matters and represent people where we have a free and open area in relation to our office.
"We now have to put some more security measures in relation to that. The staff is shaken up, and we going to have to provide counselling for our affected staff members."
According to a police, three men, one with a gun, entered the union's office and robbed two female employees in the Accounts department of $8,000. The men then fled on foot up Henry Street.
A report was made and a team of officers from the Port of Spain CID Task Force, headed by Cpls Andre Lopez, Joseph Cooraspe, PC Anderson Roberts and WPC Nekila Charles, went in search for the suspects who could not be found.
PC Noble Smith of the PoS CID is investigating.

Funny how that means entirely another thing here at the Royal Mail.we are going to have to provide counselling for our affected staff members.
