Hundreds of post offices face being sold off under plans to privatise Royal Mail

NEARLY 400 high street post offices could be sold as part of a ­“sweetener” deal to privatise Royal Mail, say ­campaigners.

They fear 373 branches in prime locations could be ­redeveloped as restaurants and supermarkets. Labour ­critics of privatisation plans are demanding measures to stop valuable Royal Mail assets being promised to a potential buyer by “stealth”.

Labour peer Lord Whitty said: “I am particularly ­concerned because the Post Office’s property portfolio consists mainly of directly administered branches, mostly located in city centres and prime locations.”

More than 6,000 branches have closed in 10 years.

ConDem ministers say plans to sell off Royal Mail will safeguard the 11,500-strong network.
