Letter to Branches

No. 712/07 Ref 60000 Date: 8 August 2007

TO: ALL BRANCHES WITH POSTAL MEMBERS

Dear Colleague

ROYAL MAIL DISPUTE

We understand there has been a further Royal Mail briefing this morning covering a letter sent to me by Adam Crozier at 18:40 yesterday evening.

Royal Mail’s briefing also stated that strike action had been suspended. This is not true.

We have all seen these Royal Mail tactics before. They are deliberately designed to mislead the workforce and undermine Union support. During this period we can also expect Royal Mail to make further concessions direct to he workforce in an attempt to disguise the weakening of their position.

Despite Royal Mail’s lack of integrity and Union-busting tactics, the CWU continues to make every effort to resolve this dispute. Please ensure the latest situation is communicated accurately to all members in every workplace.

The Latest Situation

1. The CWU’s response to Royal Mail’s latest letter is attached.

2. Both parties have sought the assistance of the TUC in an effort to move the dispute forward. This development is being considered by the Postal Executive later today and further information will be sent out in due course.

In the meantime - for the purpose of total clarity - strike action continues unless notified in writing by CWU Headquarters.

Yours sincerely

Dave Ward
Deputy General Secretary (P)

Dear Adam,

The following will respond to your e-mail received at 18:40 yesterday evening - the content of which you briefed to staff this morning.

The offer that was made to call off strike action still stands. The offer was made direct to you – not through the media. I have attached a further copy of the offer to this letter.

The key issue remains whether or not Royal Mail are prepared to engage in meaningful negotiations to reach agreement on all issues that lie behind this dispute. I have seen no evidence from Royal Mail that this is the case.

We both know the TUC are in the process of trying to assist both parties in moving this dispute forward. It is disappointing that you have chosen to publicly undermine this process by briefing staff today that strike action has been suspended. You and Allan are both aware this is not true.

We are due to meet on Thursday with Allan Leighton present. If we cannot make progress on the TUC initiative today, we must both grasp the opportunity to move forward at Thursday’s meeting.

In the meantime strike action continues.

Yours sincerely

Dave Ward

Like wise emailed to my rep.

Have you seen the message Billy Hayes has had to put on the cwu website (and is also on a thread on this site) - it's something when a company is so desperate they have to lie to that extent :no no :arrrghhh :Boo hoo! ;liar
