Keep the Post Public Campaign: Postal Services Bill & Future Rallies & Marches

As colleagues will know, the Postal Services Bill is now being considered by the House of Lords.

We have been advised that the second reading of this Bill is scheduled to take place in the main chamber of the House on 16 February 2011.

After the second reading, the Bill enters a House of Lords Committee stage which is where detailed debate on the Bill and amendments to it are considered.

There is some slight doubt to this timetable because, as branches may be aware, the timetable for business in the House of Lords has been affected by prolonged debate on other pieces of proposed legislation. If there is any change to this date we will, of course, advise branches promptly.

The House of Lords is in recess from 17-28 February inclusive, which means the Committee stage for the Postal Services Bill will not commence until next month at the earliest.

Regional Secretaries met at CWU headquarters today, 9 February, to review the campaign so far and consider arrangements for further campaigning.

Branches are asked to support in any way they can the demonstration organised by the Nottinghamshire Amal branch and Midlands Regional Committee in Beeston, Nottingham on 19 February. Details are available from Lee Barron at midlandregion@cwu.org and Darren Geblocki in the branch.

Please also support a further march and rally in Gloucester on 12 March 2011. The details are as follows:

Congregate in Gloucester Park at 11am
March setting off at 11.30.
The march will exit Gloucester Park and turn left into Park Road, at junction with Brunswick Road it will then turn right and walk towards Eastgate Street at the junction of Brunswick Road and Eastgate Street the march will then walk towards the cross into Westgate street where a rally with guest speakers will take place on the steps of Shire Hall.

A number of speakers from the Anti-Cuts Organisations – individuals to be confirmed.

The event is being advertised across the SW Region to CWU and Public Sector Unions / Anti-Cuts Organisations and Student Groups
