Hundreds of pieces of mail fluttered onto interstates in eastern Missouri Sunday after the back door of a contractor's semi carrying mail for the U.S. Postal Service popped open.
The mail was scattered along 70 miles of highway near St. Louis, according to Postal Inspector Dan Taylor, who said the tractor trailer was carrying mostly statements and bills bound for the West Coast. He added that he didn't think any personal mail was lost.
The truck had just left a St. Louis-area distribution center and was headed to a Memphis distribution point, Taylor said.
Police and postal authorities spent hours along the highway picking up mail Sunday afternoon.
The Postal Service is investigating how the incident happened so it can be prevented in the future, Taylor said.

Re: Open postal truck scatters mail for 70 miles USA
I did that
Only it wasnt 70 miles and it wasnt my fault.
I took collections to the MC one lunchtime using the high top but I didnt
realise that the back door that slid down wasnt catching and as I drove, the
door came up and bags of mail went flying out onto the road.
With the music blasting, I didnt hear anything and mirrors are for reversing and since I was
going forward I didnt find out until some phg at the MC told me.
I collected the mail from a police station on the way back.
No one knew that it was a fault and they just thought I had forgotten and so the
same scenario was played the very next day apart from the phg who had turned purple this time
with flecks of spit flying everyways along with expletives. I told him to go away of a fashion and went on my
way collecting the bags & loose mail from the same police station. They didnt look surprised to see me again
Got back to office and our phg had called the RM garage who came up and took it away to sort.
God, that brought back some sentimental memories.........
