UK postal service under threat, campaign claims

A coalition of postal workers, union officials and MPs opposed to the privatisation of Royal Mail have launched a press campaign to build support for their bid "to keep the post public".

The Postal Services Bill, introduced in October and currently passing through Parliament, proposes privatisation of the Royal Mail and mutualisation of the Post Office.

The Keep The Post Public campaign, however, claims the bill fails to protect the Royal Mail's commercial relationship with the Post Office, opening up the possibility of alternative outlets in supermarkets.

The press campaign, which claims "privatisation means kissing goodbye to an affordable, daily Christmas post" launched today (15 December) across several national titles.

The anti-bill coalition, which includes the Communication Workers Union and shadow business secretary John Denham, has organised a central London rally later today.

They plan to focus their efforts on gaining the support of the public in marginal constituencies held by Conservative and Liberal Democrat MPs who they believe could be persuaded to oppose the bill.
