Got the job - but Royal Mail are now moving me

Hey everyone

I was told last week I got the job for a 25 hour position on 12 month contract being a postie. They are currently going through security checks and were to let me know my start date - today however, the recruitment center rang and said unfortunately the position cannot be offered BUT they can offer me same type contract more local to me. So i took it as its more local and would work out better I feel. I have checked the contract in my applications and it differs slightly tho, it now states its for a postman/postwoman with driving, my original one wasn't for driving. I am just wondering what the driving duties involve? I can drive, have full licence with no penalties, but can I use my own car? It sounds stupid but i'm a little nervous to use a transit van as i've never had experience driving something bigger than a car!

If someone could let me know what it exactly means to take the contract with driving id appreciate it, does it purely mean because my walk will be a fair distance from delivery office or that I will actually be using a van to pickup mail/drop off mail etc?

I'm not sure my car being a basic peugeot 206 would cope with weight of all the bags? so maybe i'd have to use a van?

Also, the contract was orignally 12 months, it now says only 3 months, what is the chance of being kept on? or moving delivery offices?

TBH all of the contracts now say occasional driving and with regular posties probably taking the driving duties over Christmas its unlikely you will do any driving.

However if you do then they will do what is known within RM as a "Conversion" drive which is about an hours driving around with someone in the passenger seat. Its not a test just a quick check to make sure your safe and competent.


Being kept on after 3 months : depends whats happening in your area as its different round the country. Some areas are loosing Mail Centers so some of the Posties that work there may transfer into deliveries. Also we has a spate earlier this year of RM not extending contracts, and in some cases even cancelling them, this is unlikely to happen to you but its worth being aware of it.

Don't worry too much mate if you want to use a van they get you to grips with it first by giving you a changeover test.

Chances are if you're driving a van at all it will be a small car derived van like the bipper.
No difference between driving one of those and a car....apart from no rear view mirror.

With regards to the driving needed in the contract - is this purely because my delivery route will be quite a distance from the office so i would need to get there to deliver the mail or is it because I will take on different work like collecting mail from post offices etc?

That is one of the reasons that you might drive, others would be that this is the method used at that office, or you might be doing what we call a rural delivery (usually spread out geographically), or you could be on a firms duty where the weight and volume can be high. TBH there are many different reasons you might drive for RM far too many to list to be fair.

Possibly but TBH very unlikely as this is a job that the senior men usually opt for, at least in my office.

Guys what is the situation on security checks?! Its taken nearly 3 weeks to process , I was expecting to be at my induction today but they still didnt ring by end lf last week to confirm that. Don't get me wrong - I have no crim record or anything like that it just seems to take an awful long time? I hope I still have the position, I am ringing in 2mo if no call again today.

I'd rather start after xmas now, as feel people wont have the time of day to train me coming into 2 weeks before xmas!
