Angry Royal Mail workers in protest over privatisation plans

POSTMEN and women from Cleethorpes have delivered a message to politicians that they will not take the privatisation of the Royal Mail lying down.

Furious posties from the town have slammed recent Government proposals to hand over control of the national institution to a private company, amid fears more than 300 local jobs could be under threat.

A group of worried workers took to the streets as part of a drive to raise awareness among residents and campaigners wasted no time in asking supportive shoppers in St Peter's Avenue to sign their petition calling for a rethink.

Campaign leader Roy Crampton has been a postman in Grimsby and Cleethorpes for the past 11 years and he fears public services will be cut if the Royal Mail falls into the hands of foreign investors.

He said: "Frankly, I think it is appalling that the Government is even considering this move.

"We are all extremely worried that if this happens, then there will be job losses and the actual service will become poorer.

"The people of Grimsby and Cleethorpes have been used to a particular service and we don't want to leave those who might be elderly and unable to get out and about high and dry.

"Ultimately, all companies think about is how to make a profit, which is fair enough unless it impacts on people like us who are trying to earn a living."

The 45-year-old from Grimsby was joined by a delegation from the Doncaster sorting office and there was no shortage of signatures from passers-by, who appeared equally concerned about the potential sale of the Royal Mail.

Maureen Bathurst, 71, from Grimsby Road, said: "I think it's shocking really.

"We should be proud that the Royal Mail is in British hands, not trying to flog it to the highest bidder."
