Postal workers held a protest urging the public to help fight against any privatisation of Royal Mail.
Members of the Communications Workers Union (CWU) were in Durham city centre collecting names for a petition against moves to sell off the service.

Labour leadership candidate Ed Balls, who has pledged his support to keeping the Royal Mail publicly owned, visited the campaigners on Elvet Bridge yesterday as they gathered signatures.

Mr Balls later met with members of the community at Oxclose Community School in Washington.

Steve Brown, an association branch secretary of the CWU in the region, who organised the petition in Durham City, said he was pleased with the response from the public and gained a lot of signatures on the petition.

The union believes privatisation would lead to a drop in service and a rise in prices.
