Amsterdam - The Netherlands' Royal Post (TNT) was red-faced Thursday in conceding that it had been delivering mail with counterfeited stamps carrying an anti-royalist message.
TNT admitted that its mail carriers had "accidentally" delivered countless letters bearing bogus stamps with a slogan demanding an end to the monarchy.
In the spot where in official stamps there is an image of the head of Queen Beatrix, the bogus stamps bore the message: "A president belongs in this place!"
The stamps were printed and sold by the "Pro Republica" group which wants to end The Netherlands' constitutional monarchy and replace it with a republic.
A TNT spokesman said that usually the post office does not forward items which have political statements on them. But in this case, the bogus-stamped letters slipped through the controls, which were after all only the work of humans.
