Parcels firm delivers record £11m turnover

THE Bolton-based firm, Parcel2Go, which has become one of the UK’s largest delivery companies, has announced a record turnover of £11.6 million.

And revenue for the next 12 months is expected to grow to £16 million — almost double the figure of £8.5 million recorded last year.

The company, which was recently named Online Business of the Year at the prestigious T-Mobile Fast Growth Business Awards, has enjoyed consistent year-onyear growth of between 60 to 70 per cent.

The company’s rise can be linked to the boom in people switching to shopping on the internet and receiving goods through the post and by courier, allied to the massive growth of sites such as eBay.

Richard Adams-Mercer, cofounder of Parcel2Go, said: “We are delighted with our strong growth figures over the past 12 months.

“Our customer base has expanded continuously, and we are constantly exploring new avenues and innovations to target, all of which are strengthening our offering.”

Parcel2Go now has 125,000 active customers, compared with 90,000 at year end March, 2009, which is partly attributable to the changes in people’s spending habits and search for bargains online.

As online sites such as eBay continue to grow in popularity and customers distribute and return more purchases by post, they are using delivery companies such as Parcel2Go more and more.

The company has also greatly benefited from the industrial unrest at the Post Office in recent months.

Every time a dispute went ahead, or was announced, Parcel2Go acquired more customers and many of them stayed.

Parcel2Go was founded in 2000 by father and son team Fil and Richard Adams-Mercer, along with colleague Steve Kramer. The company now has 35 employees and works out of a converted mill in Coe Street, Bolton.

Parcel2Go has struck up partnerships with the world’s leading delivery companies, including FedEx, DHL, UPS and City Link, in order to offer customers a cheaper and more flexible parcel delivery service.

The company developed an online presence during the first dot.com boom and has since steadily grown to be one of the UK’s leading parcel delivery services.

● Parcel2Go also won Business of the Year at the 2009 Bolton and Bury Business Awards held at the Reebok last year. This year’s awards, which have attracted a high calibre of entrants, will be held on Thursday, June 10, at the Reebok Stadium.
