THE jobs of 27 employees at an Inverness delivery and courier business are under threat.

Talks are under way between the UK-wide DHL Domestic company and unions over the closure of the Inverness depot at Henderson Drive on the city’s Longman Industrial Estate. It is understood that the company, which is one of the world leaders in international logistics, has recently closed 59 depots, resulting in more than 700 redundancies.

It was acquired in January by the Home Delivery Network, the UK’s longest-established logistics company, which was founded 90 years ago.

A spokesman for DHL Domestic confirmed yesterday that it has entered into a consultation period with unions regarding the proposed closure of Inverness depot.

But the spokesman denied that the proposed closure was a result of an integration process between Home Delivery Network and DHL Domestic.

She said: “It has been taken in the long-term interest of the business and its employees amid a competitive market place. We appreciate that this is a difficult time for staff and we are doing everything we can to minimise redundancies and mitigate the impact on those affected.”

She indicated that some of the staff affected could be given the opportunity to relocate to other company bases.
