UPS driver finds, returns $5,200

FRANKFORD, N.J., Dec. 14 (UPI) -- A New Jersey UPS driver who found $5,200 cash in the middle of a road said he tracked down the rightful owner because it was "the right thing to do."

John Piontkowski, 32, of Frankford, and his UPS helper, Paul Paradiso, 21, of Mount Arlington, said they found the bag in the middle of the road at about 12:30 p.m. Dec. 9 in Randolph, the Morristown (N.J.) Daily Record reported Monday.

"It was just shock. I was dumbfounded," Piontkowski said of finding the bills.

The pair said a Bank of America deposit slip in the bag indicated the cash belonged to Stuyvesant Liquors in Jersey City. Piontkowski said he took the money to the bank, where a branch manager helped him get in touch with Don Knaus, the owner of the liquor store.

"It's the right thing to do," Piontkowski said of returning the money. "Anything you bought with that money wouldn't give you the satisfaction that it should."

Knaus said he does not know how the money wound up in the road but he theorized he might have left the bag on top of his wife's car before she drove away from their home.

Piontkowski said the couple gave him a "very nice reward," but he didn't mention the amount.
