Courier company struggles to recruit drivers for new Cambridge depot, despite recession

DESPITE the credit crunch, the Cambridge depot of a courier company is facing major problems recruiting new drivers.

Abby Couriers has opened a new depot in Cambridge and has been trying to recruit three more drivers to work from that depot - but to no success.

Mark Giles, managing director of Abby Couriers, said: "We are told that in the current economic climate there are a lot of people out there looking for work but that certainly doesn't seem to be the case here in Cambridge."

Abby Couriers is a family-run business, established in 1994. The head office is in Basildon, with further offices in Welwyn Garden City.

It employs almost 200 staff and has more than 175 drivers on the road providing same day delivery services across the UK and Europe. Clients include DHL, Fedex and TNT.

The company's drivers earn up to £30,000 a year, with uniforms provided along with training for suitable candidates.

Mr Giles said: "Drivers need less than six points on their licence and if they have previous multi-drop experience that is a bonus and we can then take them on for an immediate start.

"The work is five days a week with up to 80 drops a day on most routes which makes for a busy day. But as our routes are carefully chosen the drivers are not wasting time and fuel unnecessarily between customers."

- So DHL, TNT etc. can't do all the deliveries themselves, they have to sub-contract some of them to a little cowboy outfit like this.

More likely they're technically self employed so no need for a minimum wage, national insurance, holiday or sick pay and they might have to provide their own van out of the £30,000 potential earnings.

80 drops a day???

Now assuming that there are likely to be several miles between drops that is going some.

I suspect much more than meets the eye here and small wonder there are no takers.
