Royal Mail being privatised is a bad idea that should be dropped - and the sooner the better.

Business Secretary Peter Mandelson realises that the shrinking service needs to be reformed and that the upheaval will be painful.

But proposals to turn the Post Office into a non-profit public corporation, like the BBC, or an arm's length organisation along the lines of Network Rail are worth considering.

Lord Mandelson and the Prime Minister should withdraw plans to sell a slice of the Royal Mail to a foreign operator.

Part-privatisation would be unpopular, create internal Labour rifts and may not work.

To press ahead with a flawed policy is poor politics..
