Three out of four people are opposed to the Government's controversial plans to part-privatise the Royal Mail, a survey says.

Lord Mandelson, the Business Secretary, is already facing a struggle to win support from left-wing Labour MPs for the sell-off.

An independent survey, commissioned by the postal union CWU, found that three-quarters of people were against the part-privatisation and 89 per cent were against the Government selling a percentage of the Royal Mail to a foreign company.

Just one person in 100 in the survey strongly agreed that it was a positive development that the Government was "selling part of the Royal Mail to a private company".

The Government has already indicated that the most likely result is for a foreign rival like Holland's TNT to take a significant minority stake in Royal Mail.

In return the Government will agreed to take direct control of the organisation's £7billion pension deficit.

Billy Hayes, the CWU's general secretary, said: "The UK public is overwhelmingly opposed to government plans to privatise part of Royal Mail. This is a deeply unpopular move which could damage a trusted public service.

"We urge the government to take a responsible action and respond to the justified concerns of UK citizens who do not want to see this valuable public asset carved up and sold off."

One thousand people were polled by the Campaigns Company and On Net Communications over the telephone.

Late last week the CWU indicated that it would consider breaking its historic link with the Labour party if the part-privatisation goes ahead.

Any move to disaffiliate would require a vote of CWU members. If it went ahead, Labour would lose donations of more than £1million a year.
