People in West Cumbria are facing postal delays amid Royal Mail staffing issues.

Royal Mail said its Whitehaven Delivery Office is experiencing localised temporary issues which have resulted in some areas not getting post on time.

It added that issues at the office include higher levels of sick absence and vacancies.

Several West Cumbrian postcodes have been recorded as affected throughout this week and earlier this month, including CA18, CA19, CA20, CA26 and CA28.

But the postal service provider said the issues are temporary while it brings in additional agency staff and recruits new staff members.

A spokesperson said: “Routes that aren’t completed daily will be rotated and prioritised the following day.

“We’re working hard to make improvements at the Whitehaven Delivery Office to give residents a more reliable service.”

According to Royal Mail’s recent quarterly postal figures, postcodes across the county, such as in Carlisle, are currently below the full-year target for the on time delivery of first class stamped and metred post.

Royal Mail’s overall year target for the on time delivery of first class post is 93 per cent.

A total of 81.2 per cent of Carlisle postcodes have been recorded as receiving their first class post on time.

The spokesperson added: “We’re sorry to hear of concerns about deliveries.

“Our postmen and women are working hard to deliver all mail as quickly as possible.

“Nationally, our latest independently measured results show that 75.9 per cent of first class mail arrives the next working day with 97 per cent delivered within three days, and 89.3 per cent of second class items arrive within three working days with 98.2 per cent delivered within five days.

“We would encourage any customers who have concerns about their deliveries to contact us so we can investigate.”

Pay a competitive wage and there will be no problem with recruitment and sick leave….this is being done by design across the business to cut costs. £20 an hour for agency costs for 50% productivity yet will not pay a reasonable overtime rate for long serving employees

So is the problem local or national? He asked rhetorically.
The machine stops.
