Ottery postman goes 'above and beyond' for Budleigh couple

An Ottery St. Mary postman who voluntarily helped deliver vital medications to a terminally ill man said he was just doing his job and that his actions hearkened back to a time when the post office was about community and service.

Nick Harlond-Moore, who has recently retired from the Royal Mail after 13 years of service, had noticed an unopened package delivered by a courier to a wrong address but recognised the names of the people the package was addressed to as regulars on his Budleigh Salterton patch.

Nick, 34, didn't hesitate to make an extra stop to ensure the medications were delivered to Budleigh resident Dorothy Ferrier and her husband Johnnie even though he was not contracted to deliver such packages.

"With a smile to die for, Nick appeared at our door and handed us the hospital brown bag of meds," said Dorothy.

Before Nick's arrival, it had been a somewhat frantic period for the couple after Johnnie was discharged from hospital for his third stay in three weeks following what Dorothy called a "fairly traumatic night."

The medications, which had been promised by the hospital to be delivered to their home, had failed to appear by the following morning. Dorothy and several kind-hearted neighbours patrolled the streets to see if they could find the package, but without success until Nick appeared at the door.

"So many kind friends and neighbours are helping us at this time and we feel very fortunate to live in Budleigh," said Dorothy. "But the 'above and beyond' award has to go to Nick, our wonderful postman who served his community so well."

Nick, who is originally from Exminster, said he did what he did because the job should be about serving the community.

"It's not the job it was," he said. "Because I was here when it was a service, being part of the community, this felt just like doing part of the job."

Nick is undecided about what he wants to do next. "I just got a bid fed up to be honest," he said. "Before, it used to be a service but now the core of it is about making money."

Whatever he does decide to do, Nick's legacy will live on in the appreciation of his local community.

"All the best Nick, we hope any new employer appreciates the gem he has got," said Dorothy. "Nick is a real loss to the Royal Mail and to our community."
